American Health Care Association Storms, tornadoes and fires are natural disasters that can happen at any time. Make sure your facility has a plan to respond to natural and other types of disasters. The American Health Care Association (AHCA) and the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) offer several resources that can assist you and your staff in preparing emergency action plans.

Department of Health and Human Services: Suggested Provisions for Nursing Home Emergency Plans The Office of Inspector General (OIG), Department of Health and Human Services, compiled a list of suggested emergency plan provisions. The list was generated from a review of provisions suggested by a number of informed sources, including state requirements and guidelines, professional associations, expert interviews and professional publications. The OIG' chart describes each of the suggested provisions. Each provision was suggested by at least two sources and most provisions were suggested by many of the sources.

IDPH's Center for Disaster Operations and Response The Iowa Department of Public Health's (IDPH) Center for Disaster Operations and Response (CDOR) has assembled a planning guide for hospitals. The guide contains guidelines on the following activities in which hospitals can participate: planning, exercise and education, epidemiology and surveillance, and information technology and communication, and risk communication.
