Rod Roberts was selected in 2011 by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to serve as the Director of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. A native Iowan, Rod was born in Waverly and raised in Zearing, which he considers his hometown.
Upon graduation from the Iowa Christian College in 1980, Rod served as the first full-time pastor of the Shirley Christian Church in Shirley, New York. In 1985, he returned to Iowa where he served as the first full-time minister of the Carroll Church of Christ until 1990. In 1991, Rod accepted the position of Executive Director for the Christian Evangelistic Mission, where he oversaw the statewide development of new churches affiliated with the Christian Churches/ Churches of Christ, and assisted existing Iowa congregations with leadership training and strategic planning.
Rod began his Legislative career in 2000, when he was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives to serve the people of Carroll County, as well as portions of Crawford and Sac counties. As a legislator, he has advocated on behalf of his constituents, and served on numerous committees, including the Appropriations, Economic Growth, Education, Human Resources, International Relations, and the Education Budget Subcommittee. During his 10 years in the Iowa House, Rod held various leadership positions, including Assistant Majority Leader, Assistant Minority Leader, and chairman of the Administration and Rules Committee.
As Director of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals, Rod oversees a staff of 350 dedicated employees who are responsible for inspecting, licensing and certifying health care providers and supplies, food establishments, hotels and motels, and social gambling activities. Staff in DIA also conducts welfare fraud investigations, as well as contested case hearings involving Iowans who have been adversely impacted by State rules or regulations.
Active in his community, Rod has been a member of the Carroll Rotary Club since 1987, and served as Club President in 1990. He was also a member of the New Hope Village Board of Directors, served as President of the Village’s Foundation Board, and served on the Carroll Community School District Board of Directors.
Rod and his wife, Trish, are the parents of two grown children, and grandparents to two.
