Jurisdiction of the Division

Old Supreme Court Chamber, Iowa State CapitolThe Administrative Hearings Division of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals conducts contested case administrative proceedings for nearly all state agencies and some local government agencies.  In most cases, the administrative law judge serves as the presiding officer and issues a proposed decision that may be appealed to the final decisionmaker.  But Division administrative law judges also assist some licensing boards and other agencies in serving as the presiding officer and writing the decision that is issued directly by the board as a final decision.  And in some cases, the administrative law judges preside and issue a final decision, appealable directly to district court.
