Fulltime ALJ Positions
The Administrative Hearings Division seeks to employ attorneys with stellar legal credentials, a dedication to public service, and an appropriate judicial temperament to serve as administrative law judges. When vacancies arise, administrative law judges are selected through a highly competitive merit selection process. A current license to practice law in the state of Iowa is required and preference is given to attorneys with administrative law, litigation, and judicial clerkship experience.
Salaries for administrative law judges vary. Starting salaries for ALJs who are new state employees generally range from $68,369.60 to $84,156.80, with annual increases. The maximum salary for experienced, nonsupervisory administrative law judges is currently $119,828.80. Administrative law judges also receive a competitive state benefits package that currently includes:
- Health, dental, long-term disability, and life insurance
- Paid vacation (initially two weeks annually), sick leave, and eleven holidays
- Iowa Public Employee Retirement System (IPERS) and voluntary deferred compensation programs
