When requested by the electrical permit holder, electrical inspectors examine the installation of new electrical systems and equipment to ensure that they function properly and comply with the state electrical code. They visit job sites to inspect new wiring, lighting, motors, service equipment, etc. They also inspect the installation of the electrical wiring for heating and air-conditioning systems, appliances, and other components. There are usually three main types of electrical inspections that happen during the installation of a new electrical system. The first is known as the “rough in” electrical inspection, which occurs prior to the installation of the wall finish. During this time, the location and installation of all wire, conduits and boxes will be inspected. The second electrical inspection is the service inspection, to ensure that the service panel is installed and grounded in a proper fashion. The third inspection is the final inspection, at which time all of the electrical devices are installed so the system is fully functional and ready for a final approval.
An electrical inspection will also be required any time that the service is disconnected to facilitate a component repair or an upgrade. Some utilities will also require an inspection if the electricity has been disconnected for an extended period of time.
