DIA becomes DIAL!

On July 1, 2023, multiple programs across four agencies became part of the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) as a new organizational structure for state government goes into effect. DIA is now the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). 

Fire Safe Cigarettes

Under Iowa Code Chapter 101B, The Cigarette Fire Safety Standards Act, and Iowa Administrative Code 661- Chapter 61, cigarettes shall not be sold or offered for sale to any person in Iowa unless:

  • The cigarettes have been tested in accordance with the test method prescribed in Iowa Code 101B.4,
  • The cigarettes meet the performance standard specified in Iowa Code 101B.4, and
  • A written certification has been filed by the manufacturer with the Department, and the cigarettes have been marked in accordance with Iowa Code 101B.7.

The marking and ignition performance of these Brand Styles have been found to meet the requirements of Iowa Code Chapter 101B, The Cigarette Fire Safety Standards Act, and Iowa Administrative Code 661—Chapter 61 (101B) and are hereby approved for sale in Iowa.

Please be aware that this approval made pursuant to Iowa Code Chapter 101B and Iowa Administrative Code 661- Chapter 61 (101B) does not automatically qualify cigarettes for sale in Iowa. In addition, brand families must be included on the Iowa Directory of Certified Tobacco Product Manufacturers and Brands maintained by the Iowa Department of Revenue and the Attorney General’s office.
